A tri-pronged spear designed to dent you (*)

Trident is was called.

Used in the playground in ancient times,

To kill!  Of course, we are appalled!

No, not a comforting piece of work,

Used with a net to kill!

By gladiators in ancient Rome

To fight another until—

One of the other, likewise well-armed,

Wounded, blood pouring forth.

Victor with sword held to victim’s throat

Waits orders to kill or abort!

Ruler, nonchalantly, thumbs up or down,

Orders to kill or to save.

Thumbs down, sword thrust and more blood spills out,

Crowd roars!  For that is what they crave!

Captured by Rome, the prisoner has choice,

Die in arena or rot,

Rot in a cell or fight that is the choice!

Either way it was death!  They were bought.

But today we are cultured, “The glory of war!”

We fight and we always lose (**)

Right or wrong results are the same,

To live or die, we may choose!

It is appointed to man, once to die!

After death to judgment!

Though we do not seek for glory in that death

After death it is fulfillment!  (for some)

(*) Very poor joke!

(**) Always!  Friends, fathers, sons.
