DEATH AND NEW LIFE

Devastation, no life seen anywhere!

Nearby muddy pond, naked girls swimming there,

So happy they tried to lure us in.

We just sat and watched, that ain’t no sin(?)

.

.

Philippine Islands, small village nearby,

Destroyed, enemy fled, no time for goodbye.

Life-style expectancy about sixty-five,

Sure, live for today!  Tomorrow you die!

.

.

My squad saw differently, it was the life beyond,

Wanted to be ready when death came around.

Questions tossed my way, often times I could tell

They believed!  Future had a Heaven and a Hell!

.

.

One youngster knew it all, claimed atheistic.

Faced enemy gunner, sure, a stupid trick!

Shot in the chest, reached out, hand twitching,

Started up to help, Officer’s command, “Let him be!”

.

.

This order I could take, happy to obey.

“Let the dead bury the dead.”  Sure, as they say.

Next day we returned there, white naked form!

New lesson we learned, it is well to conform! (*)

.

.

But, “Be not conformed to this world.”  Apostle preached,

Direction of your training, conformation breached!

“Be not conformed, but transformed we need to be.”

My squad was learning, look up!  What do you see?

.

.

(*) When Army commands, conform!
